After receiving the honorable Taipei City Biotech Industry Award, C.C. Chiueh, the president of Far East Biotech Company (FEBICO) was interviewed by Unique Business Network (Taiwan's most watched business network television) on the topic of biotech industry advancement. In 1998, FEBICO began the research and development on algae as an antiviral agent. This special extraction of algae has been shown to be effective against viral infection in animal models. Further research is needed but expanded viral research was not possible due to the limited availability of biohazard laboratory. During the SARS period, a doctor was infected with SARS and died while studying the SARS virus in the Tri-Service General Hospital without proper lab environment. FEBICO is working with the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to do further viral research in safe biohazard environment.
