Article: “Cell Masks” Designed for Travelers.  Apogen® Research and Collaboration With Chang-Gung University

“Cell Masks” Designed for Travelers

In light of the increasingly alarming state of avian influenza outbreaks around the globe, nations have implemented high-profile disease prevention and containment measures.  Epidemic influenza, according to historical records, usually reaches its peak in the month of December, so those who know well as what self-protection measures can be adopted when traveling will have less a chance to be threatened by viral infections.  To prevent viral infections, there are in fact a number of steps that travelers can take, such as the use of facial masks and anti-bacterial wet tissue papers.  Further, the intake of natural microalgae extracts-Apogen®-also helps enhance one’s immunity when traveling, thus reducing the chance of contracting the virus.  Such prevention measure is like having cells put on their own masks for thorough internal and external protection.

Far East Bio-Tec Co., Ltd., with 30 years of expertise in microalgae, has spent 10 years of research and development on purifying out the natural microalgae extracts-Apogen®-from self-cultivated Spirulina FEM101.  Through scientific experiments to validate the efficacy of allophycocyanin and C-phycocyanin against enterovirus type 71 and influenza viruses A and B, the research results were published in the internationally prominent Medical Journal of Virology. The United States patent was subsequently applied for and approved.  In the feature speech presented at Biotechnica 2005 in Hannover, Germany, the published scientific data also attracted attention and interest from the Health Ministry of Germany.

Based on the data from the preliminary cell and animal studies conducted by Far East Bio-Tec and Chang Gung University, it was discovered that the anti-viral mechanism applied by Apogen® against the influenza virus is that it creates an unsuitable environment, upon the intake of Apogen®, for the influenza virus to reside in, thus reducing its replication rate and minimizing its ability to damage healthy cells.  Experimental data further shows that the use of Apogen® both before and after cells are infected with the virus can slow down the continuation of viral replication.  However, the efficacy of pre-infection intake is three-fold greater than that after the infection.  Taking natural Apogen® while traveling is deemed as building a “firewall” which deters the invasion from influenza virus.

Far East Bio-Tec and Chang Gung University are currently conducting a further scientific study on Apogen®, in the hope of finding broader applications for Apogen®.  Due to its rich essential nutrients and classification as health food, Apogen® can be regarded as the best product choice for long-term health protection for frequent travelers.

Q & A

Q: What is Apogen®?

A: Apogen® is natural extracts obtained from special Microalgae FEM-101 through the proprietary extraction process.

Q: Can extracts from all microalgae species be used for the formulation of Apogen®?

A: No.  Apogen® is made from patented formula and proprietary manufacture process.  Therefore, not any microalgae can be used as the substance for making Apogen®.

Q: What is microalgae?

A: Any alga invisible to the human eyes is classified as microalgae.  However, many species exist in the microalgae category.  Microalgae that have been found to be good to human health include Chlorella (green algae), Spirulina (blue-green algae), and newly discovered Rhodophyta (red algae).
